Sailfin lizards are a special kind of reptile.

Sailfin lizards are special reptiles. They belong to a group called Hydrosaurus. These lizards are quite large. They get their name from a sail on their tails.

These lizards are semiaquatic. This means they live in water and on land. They love to stay near rivers. They also like mangrove swamps.
Scientists have studied these lizards for a long time. In the 1800s, people called them Lophura. Then, a person named Poche found a problem in 1903. The name Lophura was already used for birds called pheasants. Later, researchers looked at lizards from Sulawesi. Since 1873, many thought they were one species. But in 2020, Denzer and others found more. They showed there were actually five different species.
There are five valid species of sailfin lizards today. One is the Moluccan sailfin lizard. It lives on Ambon and Ceram islands. Another is the Sulawesi black sailfin lizard. The Indonesian giant sailfin dragon also lives on Sulawesi.
These lizards face some hard jobs today. They are losing their homes. This is called habitat loss. People also take them from the wild for trade. This is a big problem for them.
The genus *Hydrosaurus* contains a group of large reptiles known as sailfin dragons. These lizards belong to the family Agamidae. They are easily recognized by a large, sail-like structure on their tails. This unique feature gives the genus its common name.
Sailfin lizards are semiaquatic animals. This means they spend much of their time in or near water. They are typically found in habitats like rivers and mangrove swamps.
There are currently five valid species of *Hydrosaurus* recognized by the Reptile Database. Each species lives in specific parts of Southeast Asia.
The third species is *Hydrosaurus microlophus*. It is sometimes called the Indonesian giant sailfin dragon or the Makassar sailfin lizard. This lizard also lives on Sulawesi.

Scientific understanding of these lizards has changed over many years. In the 19th century, scientists used the name *Lophura* for this genus. However, in 1903, a researcher named Poche identified a problem. He noted that the name *Lophura* was already being used for a genus of pheasants. Because names cannot be shared by different animals, the name had to change. Since 1873, researchers like Günther believed that populations on Sulawesi were all part of the *H. amboinensis* species. This view changed in 2020 when Denzer and other scientists conducted new research. They resurrected the names *H. celebensis* and *H. microlophus*. This discovery increased the known number of species from three to five.
Today, these lizards face significant challenges in the wild. They are threatened by habitat loss, which occurs when their natural environments are destroyed. This is often caused by coastal development.
The study of *Hydrosaurus* connects to the broader field of conservation genetics. Researchers use genetics to understand how these species are related and how they are changing. This work helps scientists identify which species are most at risk from human activity. By studying how these lizards interact with their water-based habitats, we learn more about the delicate balance of island ecosystems in Indonesia and the Philippines.
