Hydrazine is a clear, flammable liquid. It has a smell like ammonia.

This substance is very important for science and industry. It is used to make many different things. It helps create medicines like the antifungal fluconazole.

It also helps make pesticides to protect plants. People use it to make foams and even the gas used in airbags. Because it is hazardous, it is often handled in a water solution.

In space, hydrazine works as a propellant. A propellant is a substance used to push a spacecraft. Some engines use it as a monopropellant. This means the liquid is passed over a catalyst. A catalyst is a material that helps a chemical change happen faster. In these engines, the hydrazine breaks down into gases like nitrogen and hydrogen. These reactions release a lot of heat. This heat turns the liquid into a large volume of hot gas. This gas provides the power to move a ship.

Scientists have studied hydrazine for a long time. Emil Fischer gave it its name in 1875. He was trying to make organic compounds. Later, Theodor Curtius made hydrazine sulfate in 1887. He could not make pure hydrazine at that time. The Dutch chemist Lobry de Bruyn finally prepared pure hydrazine in 1895. This history shows how hard it was to work with this liquid. Many researchers helped us understand it over many years.

Many famous space missions have used hydrazine. The Viking landers used it in the 1970s. The Mars rovers Curiosity and Perseverance also used it.

Some jets like the F-16 use it for emergency power. This helps if an engine stops working in flight. In the 1960s, some satellites used hydrazine in fuel cells. These fuel cells turn the liquid into electricity. This is a very useful way to get power in space.

We must treat hydrazine with great care. It can be very dangerous to touch or breathe. It can cause skin irritation or even burns. It can also make people feel sick or dizzy.

Some groups say it might even cause cancer. Because of these risks, workers wear special safety suits. These suits keep the liquid away from their skin and lungs. Scientists are now looking for safer ways to do these jobs.
