Beyond rockets, the manual details various types of firearms and explosive devices. The "fire lance" was a common tool that combined a firearm with a flamethrower. 
The history of the *Huolongjing* is tied to the life of Jiao Yu, a Ming general and firearm manufacturer. He worked for the first Ming emperor, Zhu Yuanzhang, and managed the *Shenjiying* armoury. While the earliest material in the text dates back to 1280, the most complete edition, the *Huolongjing Quanji*, was published in 1412. This edition included a preface detailing Jiao Yu's service during the Red Turban Rebellion. Later, in 1632, second and third volumes were published. These additional volumes described newer technology like muskets and breech-loading cannons. However, the later Qing dynasty eventually outlawed the book's reprinting due to offensive language used within the text.
The scientific significance of the manual lies in its precise understanding of nitrate levels. The text describes gunpowder formulas with nitrate concentrations ranging from 12% to 91%.
