She was a prolific writer, playwright, and folk dancer. Garborg also worked as a theatre instructor and a political leader. She is perhaps most famous for her work reviving the bunad tradition. The bunad is a type of traditional Norwegian clothing. Her diverse talents helped shape the modern cultural identity of Norway. She focused on preserving history through art, dance, and literature.

Garborg used many different methods to share her cultural vision. She wrote numerous novels, poetry collections, and dramatic plays. Many of her plays were performed at major venues like the Christiania Theatre. She also published articles regarding traditional cooking in the Nynorsk newspaper, Den 17de Mai. These articles were later collected into her 1899 book, Heimestell. Furthermore, she edited several books about folk songs and traditional dances. She even wrote a specific book on the bunad tradition in 1903.

Her literary and theatrical work can be categorized into several distinct areas. As a dramatist, she wrote plays such as Mødre (1895) and Sigmund Bresteson (1908). As a novelist, she published works like Eli (1912) and many others through 1931. In the realm of folk culture, she founded Det norske spellaget in 1899. This group held its first performance at the Eldorado Teater. She was also a co-founder of Det Norske Teatret. These organizations helped bring traditional Norwegian arts to the stage.

Hulda Garborg's life began on the Såstad farm in Stange Municipality. She was born on February 22, 1862, to Christian Frederik Bergersen and Marie Petrine Olsen. After her parents divorced, she moved to Hamar with her mother. When she was twelve, her family relocated to Kristiania. At age seventeen, she worked in a store to help support her family. In 1887, she married the writer Arne Garborg. They lived in a small cabin at Kolbotnen for nine years.

During this time, they traveled to Berlin, Paris, and other parts of Germany.

Her influence was significant across many sectors of Norwegian society. She was a central figure among the radical youth in Kristiania. Her political involvement included representing the Liberal Left Party on the Asker municipal council. Garborg also contributed heavily to the debate on women's rights. She wrote books like Kvinden skabt af Manden (1904) to address these issues. Her impact was officially recognized in 1932. In that year, she was appointed a Knight, First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav.

Notable examples of her writing show her wide range of skill. Her novel Eli was translated into Dutch in 1915 and Swedish in 1916. She also wrote the drama Edderkoppen (1904), which was performed at the Nationaltheatret. Her poetry collections included Kornmoe (1930) and Symra (1934). After her death in 1934, her work continued through the preservation of her husband's legacy. She edited the diaries of Arne Garborg for publication. Her own diaries from 1903 to 1914 were eventually published in 1962.

Garborg's work connects art to national identity and social change. By promoting the bunad and folk dance, she linked physical tradition to cultural pride. Her writing on women's rights connected literature to political activism. She bridged the gap between rural traditions and urban theatre. Her life demonstrates how one individual can influence multiple social systems. Through her efforts, traditional Norwegian customs became a celebrated part of modern life.
