Alexander Lange Kielland was a prominent Norwegian writer of the 19th century. He is recognized as one of "The Four Greats" of Norwegian literature. This elite group also included Henrik Ibsen, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, and Jonas Lie. Kielland was a master of realism, a style that focuses on depicting life as it truly is. He used his talent to act as a spokesman for the weak. Through his writing, he often criticized the flaws within society.

Kielland's writing process involved a deep engagement with social issues. He used various formats to reach his readers, including novels, short stories, and plays. He was particularly skilled at writing satirical comedies. Satire is a method of using humor or irony to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices. His plays, such as "Tre Par" from 1886 and "Professoren" from 1888, used this technique. He also wrote many short stories, such as "Novelletter" in 1879. These works allowed him to examine different parts of human nature and social structures.

His literary output included several distinct types of works. He wrote a famous trilogy of novels that explored religious hypocrisy. This trilogy began with "Gift" in 1883, followed by "Fortuna" in 1884, and ended with "Sankt Hans Fest" in 1887. In the novel "Gift," he specifically debated the heavy use of Latin in Norwegian schools. One character, a boy named Marius, is shown reciting Latin grammar while on his deathbed. He also wrote significant standalone novels like "Garman & Worse" in 1880 and "Skipper Worse" in 1882.

Kielland's personal history is rooted in the city of Stavanger, Norway. He was born on February 18, 1849, into a wealthy merchant family. His father was the consul Jens Zetlitz Kielland. He came from a family with many notable members, including his sister, the landscape painter Kitty Lange Kielland. His ancestry included his great-grandfather, Gabriel Schanche Kielland. Despite his wealthy upbringing, he maintained a sincere affection for the less fortunate. When he owned a factory, he made sure to treat his workers well.

His career moved through several different professional stages. From 1889 to 1890, he worked as a journalist for the newspaper "Stavanger Avis." In 1891, he began a significant political career as the mayor of Stavanger Municipality. He held this position until 1902. After his time as mayor, he relocated to Molde. There, he served as the county governor of Møre og Romsdal.

There is much discussion regarding why Kielland stopped writing fiction so early. He virtually ceased writing fiction in 1891, publishing only previously released stories after that. Some historians argue he was too committed to realism. They suggest he could not adapt to the neo-romantic trends appearing in Norwegian literature. However, a more probable reason is his shift toward political duties. His responsibilities as a mayor and governor likely took precedence over his creative writing.

In his later years, Kielland faced significant health challenges. He suffered from shortness of breath starting in the mid-1880s. He also experienced several heart attacks. Biographers note that he had a great passion for food, which led to constant weight gain. This struggle with obesity contributed to his declining health. Alexander Kielland passed away on April 6, 1906. His legacy remains preserved through his many published works and his status among Norway's greatest literary figures.
