Kuprin's path to literature was shaped by a varied and often difficult life. He was born in 1870 in Narovchat, Penza. His father was a government official, and his mother belonged to a noble Volga Tatar family. After his father died of cholera in 1871, Kuprin lived in a widows' home in Moscow. This period of his life inspired his 1914 tale, "A White Lie." He later attended the Razumovsky boarding school and the Cadet Corps. During his time in the Cadet Corps from 1883 to 1887, he wrote thirty poems. He also practiced translating foreign verse, such as works by Heine.

His military career provided both discipline and literary inspiration. After graduating from the Alexander Military Academy in 1890, he served as a sublieutenant. He was posted to the 46th Dnieper Infantry Regiment in Proskurov. During these years, he published several stories exploring abnormal mental states. These included "A Slav Soul," "Madness," and "The Forgotten Kiss" in 1894. His story "The Inquiry" (1894) focused on the army and caused critical comment. This work likely led to his resignation from the military in 1894.

Following his military service, Kuprin spent five years traveling through the South-West of the Russian Empire. He worked many different jobs to gain life experience. He served as a dental assistant, a land surveyor, and an actor. He also worked as a circus performer, a hunter, and a fisher. These diverse roles provided the raw material for his future fiction. In 1894, he began working for various newspapers in Kiev. He believed a successful journalist required audacity, a broad view, and an amazing memory.

Kuprin's literary reputation grew through several distinct stages of writing. In 1896, he published "Moloch," his first major work. This book critiqued Russian capitalism and industrial unrest. That same year, he published "Kiev Types," a collection of eight sketches. His second collection, "Miniatures," arrived in 1897. One circus story in this collection, "Allez!," received high praise from Leo Tolstoy. He also developed the "Polesye Cycle" while working in Southern Belorussia. This cycle included the acclaimed love story "Olesya."

By 1901, Kuprin moved to Saint Petersburg to join the magazine "Zhurnal Dlya Vsekh." This move placed him at the center of Russian cultural life. He became close friends with many famous figures. He corresponded regularly with the writer Anton Chekhov until Chekhov's death in 1904. He also maintained a forty-year friendship with Ivan Bunin. In 1902, he married Maria Karlovna Davydova, who became an editor. Despite his success, Kuprin faced loneliness and social gossip in the capital.

Kuprin's work is significant for its deep social empathy. He often wrote about the "little man," a term for those with low social status. In 1904, he wrote "The Jewess" to show sympathy for a persecuted minority. His stories also examined social issues like hypocrisy and bigotry. Even when his output slowed between 1902 and 1905, the quality of his work remained high. His ability to capture the spirit of life earned him respect from many peers. Today, his life and works remain a vital part of Russian literary history.
