He was a polymath, which means he was an expert in many different subjects. Kołłątaj was a Catholic priest, a lawyer, a philosopher, and a political activist. He also worked as a historian and an educator. His life was dedicated to reforming Polish society and education. He sought to use reason and science to improve how people lived. His influence shaped the laws and schools of Poland during a very turbulent era.

Kołłątaj's intellectual journey began with deep study. He was born on April 1, 1750, in Dederkały Wielkie. He studied law at the Kraków Academy, which is now known as Jagiellonian University. He later traveled to Vienna and Italy to study philosophy and theology.

These travels exposed him to Enlightenment philosophy. He eventually earned three doctorates in law, philosophy, and theology. This vast knowledge allowed him to approach social problems from many different angles. He returned to Poland to serve as a priest and a canon of Kraków.

One of his greatest achievements was reforming higher education. As the rector of the Kraków Academy from 1783 to 1786, he introduced major changes. He replaced Latin with the Polish language for university lectures.

At that time, using a national language instead of Latin was very uncommon in Europe. He also worked with the Commission of National Education. This group helped develop a national network of schools for the country. He believed that a well-educated population was necessary for a strong nation.

In politics, Kołłątaj was a radical reformer. He led an informal group known as "Kołłątaj's Forge" within the Patriotic Party.

He wrote influential essays like "The Political Law of the Polish Nation" in 1790. He advocated for a stronger king and a larger national army. He also wanted to abolish the "liberum veto," a rule that allowed single members to stop government actions. Furthermore, he pushed for universal taxation and the emancipation of townspeople and the peasantry. He wanted to ensure more people had rights and responsibilities within the state.

His political work culminated in the Constitution of 3 May 1791. Kołłątaj was one of its co-authors. For his service, he received high honors like the Order of the White Eagle.

However, the Constitution led to the Polish-Russian war. During this conflict, he advised King Stanisław August to seek a compromise. When the opposition won, Kołłątaj had to flee to Leipzig and Dresden. In 1793, he wrote about the rise and fall of the Constitution with Ignacy Potocki. His political life was marked by these intense struggles for national sovereignty.

Kołłątaj remained active even during times of exile and imprisonment. He participated in the Kościuszko Uprising in 1794. During this revolt, he helped write the Uprising Act and the Połaniec Manifesto.

He also managed the Treasury Department for the Supreme National Council. After the uprising failed, he was imprisoned by Austrian authorities until 1802. Later, Russian authorities also imprisoned him. Despite these hardships, he continued to organize educational institutions like the Krzemieniec Lyceum in 1805. He never stopped working to rebuild Polish intellectual life.

In his later years, Kołłątaj turned toward the natural sciences. He wrote "The Physico-Moral Order" in 1811. This work focused on a socio-ethical system based on the equality of all people. He used ideas from the field of physiocracy to support his views.

He also applied geological concepts to his study of human origins. His posthumous work, "A Critical Analysis of Historical Principles regarding the Origins of Humankind," offered a Polish view of social evolution. These writings connected the study of the earth to the study of human culture. He was a true scientist and a social thinker.

Hugo Kołłątaj died on February 28, 1812. He was buried in the Powązki Cemetery. Although he died feeling abandoned by his peers, his legacy is massive. He is remembered as one of the greatest minds of his era.
