He served as the president of Venezuela from 1999 until his death in 2013. Chávez was a central figure in the rise of socialism in Latin America. He led the Fifth Republic Movement and later the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV). His leadership style and political ideas are known today as "Chavismo." This ideology is closely tied to Bolivarianism and 21st-century socialism.

Chávez was born on July 28, 1954, in the rural village of Sabaneta, Barinas.

His parents, Hugo and Elena, were both schoolteachers. As a young man, Chávez attended the Venezuelan Academy of Military Sciences in Caracas.

He was a top graduate and also enjoyed baseball, poetry, and painting. During his military studies, he became interested in the ideas of Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara. He was also inspired by leaders in Panama and Peru. These leaders believed the military should protect the interests of the working classes.

In the early 1980s, Chávez founded a secretive group called the Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement-200 (MBR-200).

He wanted to change a political system he felt was unfair. In 1992, he led an unsuccessful coup d'état against President Carlos Andrés Pérez. A coup is an attempt to take over a government by force.

Because the attempt failed, Chávez was sent to prison. He was pardoned two years later and entered politics through the Fifth Republic Movement. In 1998, he won the presidency with 56.2% of the vote. He was later reelected in 2000 and 2006 with even higher percentages of the vote.

Once in power, Chávez launched the Bolivarian Revolution to enact social reforms.

He used record-high oil revenues to fund these massive changes. His government nationalized key industries to increase state control. He also created Communal Councils to encourage participatory democracy. Most notably, he started the "Bolivarian missions." These were social programs designed to expand access to food, housing, healthcare, and education. Between 2003 and 2007, these programs led to temporary improvements in literacy and income equality.

However, the economic structure of these reforms faced major challenges. The social programs relied heavily on high oil prices and centralized state planning.

When oil prices eventually declined, the economy began to struggle. In 2010, Chávez declared an "economic war" against Venezuela's upper classes. This period was marked by shortages of goods and high inflation. By the time of his death in 2013, the economy was faltering due to deficit spending and price controls.

During his time in office, the country also saw an increase in the murder rate. There were also continued reports of corruption within the government and the police force. These issues made him one of the most polarizing leaders in modern Latin American history.

Despite the domestic controversy, Chávez was a powerful force in international politics. He helped start a socialist "pink tide" across Latin America.

He was instrumental in creating several regional groups. These included the Union of South American Nations and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States. He also helped establish the Bank of the South and the TeleSUR television network. Internationally, he aligned Venezuela with socialist leaders in Cuba, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Nicaragua. He described himself as a Marxist and a vocal opponent of neoliberalism and United States foreign policy.

He was scheduled to be sworn in for a fourth term in January 2013, but the inauguration was canceled. He died in Caracas on March 5, 2013, at the age of 58. His death marked the end of a fourteen-year era that fundamentally changed Venezuela. The political and economic systems he built continue to shape the nation and the surrounding region today.
