Hubert Van Innis was a highly successful Belgian archer.

Archery is a sport that requires extreme precision. Competitors use a bow to launch arrows at specific targets. Van Innis became one of the most decorated athletes in this sport. He is best known for his incredible success at the Summer Olympics. His career spanned many decades and showed remarkable consistency. He proved that skill can be maintained well into old age.

Van Innis began developing his skills during his childhood.

As a young boy, he worked as a milk delivery boy. He traveled to various villages around Brussels to complete his work. After his deliveries were finished, he prioritized his training. He would send his dog and his cart back home first. This allowed him to spend extra time practicing his archery. This early dedication helped him win his first major prize in Antwerp at age 13.

His early competitive career included several significant victories. In 1881, he won the royan prize of Roozendaal. He also demonstrated dominance in Antwerp during the 1890s. He won first prize in a main competition in 1893. He repeated this success in 1894, 1895, and 1896. These wins established him as a premier talent in Belgium. He was already a seasoned competitor by the time he reached the Olympic stage.

Van Innis competed in the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.

At this time, he was 34 years old. He entered four different archery events during these Games. He won two gold medals in the Au Cordon Doré 33 metres event. He also earned a gold medal in the Au Chapelet 33 metres event. In the Au Cordon Doré 50 metres, he earned a silver medal behind Henri Hérouin. His lowest ranking in Paris was a fourth-place finish in the Au Chapelet 50 metres.

Twenty years passed before he returned to the Olympic stage.

In 1920, the Summer Olympics were held in Antwerp, Belgium. Van Innis was 54 years old during this competition. He competed in several individual and team events. He won two individual gold medals in the moving bird events. These were the Individual moving bird 28 metres and the 33 metres. In the 28 metre event, he beat his only competitor, Léonce Quentin.

His success in 1920 continued with several team accomplishments.

He won two gold medals in the team moving bird events. These were for the 50 metre and 33 metre distances. He also earned a silver medal in the Team moving bird 28 metres event. In the Individual moving bird 50 metres, he won a silver medal after losing to Julien Brulé. By the end of his Olympic career, he had won six gold medals and three silver medals total.

Van Innis achieved a surprising victory much later in life.

In 1933, he won at the World Championships. He was 67 years old when this happened. This was 13 years after his final Olympic victories. Such a win at that age is very rare in professional sports. It highlights his lifelong commitment to the discipline of archery.

His athletic legacy lives on through his descendants.

His great-grandson is named Philippe Prieels. Philippe has competed in the World Archery Championships. His great-great-granddaughter, Sarah Prieels, has also competed in those same championships. This shows how his passion for the sport moved through his family. Hubert Van Innis remains a significant figure in Belgian sporting history.
