This was a big change for him and his party. He wanted to lead a new way of governing.
In August 1992, Ingraham led his party to a huge victory.
His time as leader had some very hard moments. The country had to change its banking rules to follow international laws. These changes were a big debate for many people. Some people lost their jobs during this time. The economy also faced a recession after the events of September 11. In 2002, his party lost an election to the Progressive Liberal Party. Ingraham stayed in Parliament for his home area of North Abaco. He did not lead the party for a few years after that.
Ingraham decided to lead his party once more in 2005.
Hubert Alexander Ingraham is a prominent politician from The Bahamas. He served as the Prime Minister of the nation during two different periods. He is a key member of the Free National Movement (FNM) party. His leadership shaped the political and economic landscape of the islands for many years. Ingraham is known for leading major changes in government and finance.
Ingraham was born on August 4, 1947, in Pine Ridge, Grand Bahama. His father, Jerome Ingraham, worked as a stevedore. His mother was Isabella La-Roda. He grew up in Coopers Town on the island of Abaco. He attended several schools, including the Government High School Evening Institute in Nassau. After his schooling, he studied law in Nassau. He was called to the Bahamas Bar in December 1972. He eventually became a senior partner at the law firm Christie, Ingraham and Co. Before his legal career, he held jobs in accounting at several companies. These included the Owens-Illinois Sugar Mill Company and Chase Manhattan Bank.
His journey into politics began with the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP). He joined their National General Council in 1975. In 1977, he was elected to the House of Assembly. During this time, he served on various committees. He was the Chairman of a committee that investigated political contributions. In 1982, he was appointed Minister of Housing and National Insurance. He also became the Chairman of The Bahamas Mortgage Corporation. This institution helped Bahamians secure financing for housing. However, Ingraham later left the PLP. He ran as an independent candidate in the 1987 general election. He was one of only two members expelled from the PLP to win re-election as an independent.
In 1990, Ingraham joined the Official Opposition. Following the death of Sir Cecil Wallace-Whitfield, Ingraham was elected leader of the Free National Movement. He was appointed leader of the opposition by the Governor-General. In August 1992, he led the FNM to a major victory. The FNM won 32 seats, while the PLP won only 17 seats. This victory ended 25 years of rule by Prime Minister Sir Lynden Pindling. Ingraham then became Prime Minister. During his first term, he served as the Minister of Finance from 1992 to 1995. He also managed trade and industry. He created an Investment Authority to attract new business to the country.
Ingraham's administration oversaw significant economic shifts. He is credited with helping the Atlantis Paradise Island project develop. He also managed the disengagement of the Bahamas Telecommunications Company in the mid-1990s. This process involved providing severance packages to employees who chose to leave. His government also faced challenges with international banking regulations. The OECD and the FATF required the Bahamas to make sweeping legislative changes. These changes were debated by many economists. Following these regulations and a global downturn, the economy entered a recession. This recession was caused by the dot.com bubble bust and the attacks of September 11. These events led to a loss of foreign capital in the country.
After his first term, Ingraham stepped down as party leader. Tommy Turnquest took over the leadership of the FNM in 2001. However, the FNM lost the 2002 general election by a large margin. The PLP won 29 seats to the FNM's 7 seats. Ingraham kept his seat for North Abaco but did not lead the party immediately. In 2005, he was elected FNM leader again. He stated that his return was necessary to restore trust in government. He promised to focus on social and economic policies. His party won the next election on May 2, 2007. Ingraham was sworn in as Prime Minister again on May 4, 2007.
During his second term, Ingraham again served as the Minister of Finance. He led the government until the 2012 general election. When the FNM was defeated in May 2012, Ingraham decided to resign. He announced his resignation as both the FNM leader and an MP. His resignation took effect on May 26, 2012. Hubert Minnis was subsequently elected to succeed him as Leader of the Opposition. Ingraham's career spanned decades of intense political competition. His actions influenced how The Bahamas manages its money and its laws. His life reflects the complex history of modern Bahamian leadership.
