He is most famous for his work in Persian miniature painting. These are very small, highly detailed paintings. Behzad dedicated much of his life to preserving this ancient art form. He studied the styles of the old masters from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. His goal was to save Persian miniature painting from oblivion. Through his skill, he ensured these traditional techniques remained relevant in a changing world.

Behzad's artistic method evolved through several distinct stages. In his early career, he practiced a conservative form known as Neo-Safavidism. This style focused on reviving the traditions of the Safavid era. Later, he developed a completely new idiom, or a unique way of expression. This new method merged revivalism with modernism. He successfully combined traditional Persian painting with contemporary Western styles. This fusion allowed him to create something that felt both ancient and new.

To develop this unique style, Behzad sought inspiration outside of Iran. In 1934, he traveled to Paris for a period of thirteen months. During this time, he studied various Eastern and Western painting styles. He visited several major institutions to expand his knowledge. These included the Louvre and the Guimet museum. He also studied at the Palace of Versailles. These experiences provided the Western elements that he would later integrate into his Persian miniatures.

Behzad's life began in Shiraz, Iran, in 1894. He was the son of Mirza Lotfollah Esfahani, who was a pen-holder designer. This background likely introduced him to the importance of fine detail. In 1921, Behzad married Azizeh Khanom. They had one child together named Parviz. In the early 1930s, he worked to reorganize the Sanaye Mostazrafeh Art School in Tehran. This showed his early commitment to art education and institutional growth.

His talent earned him significant international recognition and many awards. In 1949, he received the first class medal of the Ministry of Culture from Iran. In 1952, he won an Olympic diploma for best painting at the Olympic Painting Exhibition in Helsinki, Finland. He also won the first class medal of international painting in Minneapolis, USA, in 1958. In 1968, the College of Decorative Arts in Tehran gave him the honorary title of Art Master. These honors reflect his status as a living master of his craft.

One of his most important milestones was a massive exhibition in 1953. This event celebrated the millennium of Avicenna at the Museum of Ancient Iran. The exhibition featured paintings that took ten years to complete. These works included subjects like Ferdowsi and the Maedan Arch. The show caused a sensation and attracted many international visitors. It became a vital resource for scholars of oriental studies. Following this, he held a major exhibition at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris in 1955.

Behzad's influence reached far beyond the borders of Iran. He held exhibitions in many major global cities. These included London, Prague, New York, Boston, and Brussels. He also shared his work in India and Japan. In 1956, fifty of his miniatures were displayed at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Professor Soheil Anwar once wrote that Behzad belonged to the whole world. This sentiment captured how his art bridged different cultures and systems of thought.

Behzad passed away on 13 October 1968, at the age of 74. He died at 8:48 pm after a period of illness. He was buried in a cemetery near Imamzadeh Abdollah in Shahr-i Ray. His legacy continues through the Behzad Museum. This museum was founded in 1994 to honor his life and work. It is located in the Sa'dabad Complex in Tehran. The museum holds a large collection of his paintings for future generations to study.
