These plants grow on long stems called bines. Farmers train the bines to grow up strings. This helps them reach more sunlight.

There are male and female plants. Farmers only grow the female plants. These plants make small cones. Inside the cones is a yellow, waxy stuff called lupulin.

This lupulin gives beer its smell and flavor. It also adds a bitter taste. This bitterness helps balance the sweetness of the malt.

Lupulin also helps keep beer fresh. It has a special power to stop bad germs from growing. This keeps the drink from spoiling.

Growing hops is a big job. In the past, families traveled to pick them by hand.

Today, farmers use large machines to harvest them. Most hops are grown in the United States and Germany. Other places like China and the Czech Republic also grow them.
