This was a government office used to rule Inner Mongolia indirectly. In 1638, this office was renamed the Lifanyuan.
Military expansion was a central part of his rule. He developed the Eight Banners system to organize his soldiers. This system allowed Han and Mongol people to join the state. Hong Taiji also improved his army's technology. He noticed the strength of the Ming dynasty's artillery. To compete, he upgraded his own weapons. He purchased Red Cannons to ensure his army had equal might. This helped him build one of the strongest cavalries in Asia.
His military campaigns reached many different regions. In 1627, his forces crossed the frozen Yalu River into Korea. By 1637, the Joseon dynasty of Korea had surrendered. This made Korea a tributary state of the Qing dynasty. He also won three major wars to take over Inner Mongolia. These victories protected the northern borders of his empire. Although he died in 1643, he had already laid the groundwork for the conquest of the Ming dynasty.
Historians study Hong Taiji to understand the origins of the Qing era. He was given the temple name Taizong. This name is traditionally given to a dynasty's second emperor. His posthumous name was Emperor Wen, which means "the culturing emperor."
