Physical anatomy of Homo habilis shows a mix of traits. Their brain size was larger than their australopithecine ancestors. While australopithecine brains ranged from 400 to 500 cubic centimeters, Homo habilis brains were generally larger. Some studies suggest a jump to roughly 600 to 700 cubic centimeters. Their teeth were V-shaped, and their faces were prognathic, meaning the mouth jutted forward. However, the face was flat from the nose up. Some evidence, like tooth scratches, may suggest they were right-handed.
Body proportions of Homo habilis remain a mystery due to fragmentary remains. Scientists use the OH 62 skeleton to make estimates. If they had australopithecine proportions, a female might be 105 centimeters tall and weigh 30 kilograms. If they had human-like proportions, she might be 130 centimeters tall and weigh 35 kilograms. They likely had thick body hair to survive colder regions. They may have also been partially arboreal, meaning they spent time in trees. This ability would help them navigate different environments.
Homo habilis lived alongside several other species. They coexisted with Homo rudolfensis, Homo erectus, and Paranthropus boisei.
