Some advanced users even used modems and serial port interfaces to connect to remote services via telephone lines. By accessing bulletin board systems, they could read messages or download software, a capability that anticipated the modern internet by nearly 20 years.

Eventually, the distinction between home and business computers began to disappear. In the business world, the IBM Personal Computer was introduced in August 1981. This machine helped establish a standard platform because of its 16-bit open architecture. This architecture allowed for much larger memory capacities and encouraged the creation of compatible "clone" computers. As home computers began to use the same processor architectures, operating systems, and applications as business machines, the two markets merged. Today, the ability to write one's own software is much less common in the home than it was during the original home computer era.
