The Holodomor was a massive famine in Soviet Ukraine from 1932 to 1933. The word itself comes from the Ukrainian language. It means "death by hunger" or "killing by starvation."

This event was part of a wider famine across the Soviet Union. It hit the major grain-producing areas very hard. Many people lost their lives during this period. It is considered one of the most serious events in Ukrainian history.

Several factors led to this terrible hunger. The Soviet government used a process called collectivization. This meant the state took control of how farms worked. At the same time, the government wanted to grow the economy through industrialization. This required taking a "tribute" or tax from farmers in the form of grain.

In 1930, Ukraine was given very high grain quotas. These quotas were much higher than in other parts of the Soviet Union. Because Ukraine grew so much grain, these rules hit the people there the hardest.

Historians have different ideas about why this happened. Some believe Joseph Stalin planned the famine. They think he wanted to stop a movement for Ukrainian independence. Other scholars say the famine was a result of economic plans. They believe the hunger was an unintentional byproduct of collectivization. A middle view suggests the hunger started by accident. However, some say leaders then used the hunger as a weapon to punish people.

They believe it was used to stop people from resisting Soviet rules.

There are many important facts and numbers regarding the famine. The death toll is a subject of much study. In 2003, twenty-five countries signed a statement saying 7 to 10 million people died. More recent studies suggest a range between 3.5 and 5 million victims.

The famine was most severe in the spring of 1933. Many reports of death came from places like Kharkiv and Kyiv. In the years between 1926 and 1939, the Ukrainian population grew much slower than in Russia or Belarus. This shows how deeply the famine changed the country.

For a long time, people could not talk about the Holodomor. The Soviet Union banned public discussion of the famine. It was not until the 1980s that things began to change. A policy called "glasnost," or openness, allowed people to speak more freely.
