In ice hockey, pucks are made of black rubber. They are thick and heavy. Some players call them "biscuits."

Early pucks were not always rubber. Some were made of wood. Very old pucks were even made of frozen cow dung!

Today, machines make them. Workers mix natural rubber with other materials. They use a machine to shape the rubber into long logs. Then, they put the rubber into molds. These molds make the puck the right size. The molds also add a tiny pattern to the edges. This helps players control the puck with their sticks.

There are many types of pucks. Blue pucks help young players learn. White pucks help goalies practice.

Roller hockey pucks are different. They are made of plastic and are much lighter. They often have bright colors like red or orange. This makes them easy to see on roads or floors.
