These include Naka-ku, which serves as the central administrative hub. The city is also a significant economic area. In 2010, the gross domestic product for the Greater Hiroshima area was US$61.3 billion.

The geography of Hiroshima includes a humid subtropical climate. This means the city experiences mild to cool winters. The summers are typically hot and humid.

Precipitation occurs throughout the entire year. Rainfall is highest during the months of June and July. August is often the warmest month, but it can also be sunnier and drier. The landscape is shaped by its position on the delta coastline. This location helped the city grow through maritime trade and river access.

Historically, the region began as a small fishing village. It was economically linked to a Zen Buddhist temple called Mitaki-dera starting in the 12th century. The city was officially founded in 1589 by the warlord Mōri Terumoto. He established Hiroshima as a castle town on the delta. The name Hiroshima translates to "wide island" in Japanese.

After the Battle of Sekigahara, the land was given to Masanori Fukushima. Later, from 1619 until 1871, the Asano clan ruled the area. These early periods established the foundation for the urban center seen today.

Following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Hiroshima underwent rapid transformation. It shifted from a rural area to an industrial hub. In 1889, the settlement officially gained city status. The construction of Ujina Harbor in the 1880s turned it into an important port.

The San'yō Railway reached the city in 1894. This infrastructure supported military transportation during the First Sino-Japanese War. During this era, the city also became a center for military activities. It hosted the Japanese government headquarters temporarily in 1894. The city grew as cotton mills and other industrial plants were established.

In 1945, Hiroshima experienced a devastating historical event. On August 6, at 8:15 a.m., the United States Army Air Forces dropped an atomic bomb. The weapon was named "Little Boy." It was dropped from a Boeing B-29 Superfortress called the Enola Gay.

This was the first time a nuclear weapon was used in history. The blast destroyed about 70% of the city's buildings. The total number of deaths from the blast and its effects reached between 90,000 and 166,000 people. Most of these casualties were civilians, with fewer than 10% being military personnel.

After the war, the city focused on massive reconstruction efforts. The Japanese government passed the Hiroshima Peace Memorial City Construction Law in 1949. This law provided financial aid and land for rebuilding.

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was designed during this time. A key site is the A-Bomb Dome, formerly the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. It is the only structure that remains standing near the detonation site. This building is now a preserved ruin and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city also rebuilt its historic castle in 1958.

Today, Hiroshima is recognized globally as a City of Peace. It hosts international conferences regarding peace and social issues. The city government actively advocates for the abolition of all nuclear weapons.

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum opened in 1955 to educate visitors. The official flower of the city is the oleander. This flower was chosen because it was the first to bloom again after the 1945 explosion. Hiroshima remains a vital part of Japan's social and political landscape.
