The prefecture is a vital part of the country's economy and culture. It serves as a massive transportation hub for western Japan. The region is also a very popular destination for tourists. Hyōgo is part of the Kobe and Osaka metropolitan areas. This makes it one of the most populated urban regions in the world.

The geography of Hyōgo is quite diverse. The mainland stretches from the Sea of Japan in the north to the Seto Inland Sea in the south.

To the east, it borders Kyoto Prefecture. To the southeast, it meets Osaka Prefecture. To the west, it borders Tottori and Okayama prefectures. The prefecture also includes Awaji Island and a small group of islands. Awaji Island sits between the mainland and the island of Shikoku. It separates Osaka Bay from the Seto Inland Sea.

Different parts of the prefecture feel very different. The northern region is sparsely populated. The central highlands are mostly home to only tiny villages. Most of the people live along the southern coast. This area is part of a very large urban region. The weather changes depending on where you are. Summers are hot and humid throughout the entire prefecture. In the winter, the north receives abundant snow. The south usually only sees an occasional flurry of snow.

Hyōgo has a long and complex history. It includes lands that were once known as the provinces of Harima, Tajima, Awaji, Settsu, and Tanba. In the year 1180, during the Heian period, the Imperial court moved to Fukuhara. This area is now part of the city of Kobe. The capital remained in Fukuhara for five months. The prefecture is also home to Himeji Castle. This castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The region has faced significant challenges in the past. In 1995, a large earthquake hit the area. This was the Great Hanshin earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.9 Mw. It caused severe devastation in southern Hyōgo. Major parts of Kobe, Awaji, Nishinomiya, and Ashiya were destroyed. The disaster killed nearly 6,500 people. This event impacted the neighboring Osaka Prefecture as well.

Today, Hyōgo is a powerhouse of industry and science. It is part of the Hanshin Industrial Region. The prefecture relies on agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. However, it is also known for heavy industry and medical technology. Kobe Port is one of the largest ports in Japan.

It is a major international container hub. The port also hosts one of the world's fastest supercomputers. Hyōgo is also a center for scientific research. There are two Riken research institutes located in Kobe and Harima. One facility in Harima is called SPring-8, which is a synchrotron radiation facility.

Nature is well-protected throughout the prefecture. About 20% of the land is designated as Natural Parks.

These include the Sanin Kaigan and Setonaikai National Parks. There are also many smaller prefectural natural parks. These parks protect the beautiful landscapes of the region. Tourism is a big part of life here. People visit to see historic sites or enjoy local food. Famous delicacies include matsuba crab and Tajima beef. Many festivals are held throughout the year, such as the Himeji Castle Festival.
