He served two terms as the President of Argentina. His first term lasted from 1916 to 1922. He returned to office in 1928 until 1930. Yrigoyen was a leader of the Radical Civic Union, or UCR. This political party fought for democratic changes in the country. He is most famous for helping pass the Sáenz Peña Law of 1912. This law changed how elections worked in Argentina forever.

The Sáenz Peña Law introduced two very important rules. First, it established mandatory male suffrage. This means all men were required to vote. Second, it created the secret ballot. A secret ballot ensures that no one knows how a person votes. Before this law, elections were not truly democratic. Yrigoyen's activism was the main reason this law was passed. Because of these changes, he became the first president elected through a democratic process.

Yrigoyen's early life included many different experiences. He was born on July 12, 1852. His father, Martín Yrigoyen Dodagaray, was a Basque-French immigrant. His uncle, Leandro N. Alem, was a very influential political figure.

As a young man, Yrigoyen worked many jobs. He worked with his father's fleet of trolleys at the port. He also worked in a store and a judicial office. Later, he became a teacher for twenty-four years. He taught history, philosophy, and civic instruction at a normal school. He even donated his salary to hospitals for children.

In the 1880s, Yrigoyen became a successful businessman. He managed large pieces of land known as estancias. These farms were located in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and San Luis.

He raised cattle to sell to refrigeration businesses. This work made him a very wealthy man. He owned almost 25 leagues of land. He owned specific places like Estancia El Trigo and El Quemado. Yrigoyen was known for being a fair employer. He worked in the fields alongside his laborers. He paid them higher wages and gave them clothing. He eventually used his millions of pesos to fund his politics.

His presidency brought many social reforms to the working class. People often called him "the father of the poor." He helped improve conditions in factories. He also helped regulate working hours for employees. His government introduced compulsory pensions to help people in their old age. Furthermore, he helped create a public education system that was accessible to everyone.

These changes helped raise the standard of living for many Argentines.

Yrigoyen was also a strong nationalist. He believed Argentina needed to be independent in many ways. He wanted the country to manage its own currency. He also believed Argentina should control its own energy and oil exploitation networks. He wanted the nation to have control over its transportation systems as well. This focus on national control was a major part of his political identity.

However, his time in power also saw growing political tension. The country became very polarized between different groups. Yrigoyen's supporters saw his movement as the true voice of the people. They called it personalist radicalism. They opposed what they called the "oligarchic and conservative regime." The opposition disagreed with his methods. They accused the Executive Branch of being arrogant. They wanted Congress to have more power, especially regarding federal interventions. This tension continued until a coup d'état in 1930 ended his second term.
