What is a hinterland? The word comes from German. It means the land behind a place. This often means the land behind a port. A port is a place for ships. Ships bring and take goods there. The hinterland helps the port move these goods.

Today, the word has many uses. It can mean the area around a city. It can also mean the countryside. This is often a rural area. Some people call it a market area. The size of a hinterland can change. It depends on how easy it is to travel. It also depends on the cost of travel.

In the United States, people use it differently. In the Midwest, it often means the backcountry. This is land far from the ocean. In Italy, it describes areas near Milan. In Germany, some people use it for empty land. This is land with few people and few roads.

Some people even use it for a person. A politician might have a vast hinterland. This means they have many interests. They know about art, science, and books. They know things outside of their work.
