The Mexican National Anthem is a powerful song for the people of Mexico. It is also known by its first words, "Mexicans, at the Cry of War." This anthem is a symbol of great pride for the nation. Creating the anthem was a two-step process involving both words and music. First, a poet had to write the lyrics for a contest. Then, a composer had to write the music to match those words. The lyrics were written by Francisco González Bocanegra. He won a competition held in 1853. Later, Jaime Nunó wrote the music that we hear today.

The story of how the lyrics were written is quite famous. In 1853, President Antonio López de Santa Anna started a contest for a new anthem. Francisco González Bocanegra did not want to join the contest at first. He thought writing love poems was different from writing an anthem. His fiancée, Guadalupe González del Pino, wanted him to try. She even locked him in a bedroom to help him focus!

Inside that room, Francisco saw pictures of Mexican history that gave him ideas. He wrote ten verses and slid them under the door. He won the contest by a unanimous vote on February 3, 1854. For the music, a second contest was held after the first choice was rejected. Jaime Nunó, a band leader, won with his piece titled "God and Freedom."

The anthem became official on September 16, 1854, which is Mexico's Independence Day. The first performance happened at the Santa Anna Theatre. It featured singers Claudia Florenti and Lorenzo Salvi. Today, the anthem has specific rules for how to use it. At big sports events like the Olympic Games, a shorter version is played. This helps everyone join in the moment of national pride.
