This album was a major change for his music. Before this, he mostly played acoustic folk music. On this record, he used rock musicians as a backing band. He mixed driving, blues-based music with the skill of poetry. This helped him capture the feeling of America at that time. Many people believe this album helped start the music of the 1960s.

Making the music happened in two main parts at a studio in New York.

The first part happened in June 1965 with producer Tom Wilson. During these sessions, the band recorded the hit song "Like a Rolling Stone." A young musician named Al Kooper joined in to play the electric organ. He had never played that instrument before, but he made up a famous part as he played. The second part of recording happened in late July and early August. During this time, a new producer named Bob Johnston helped the band finish the album.

Dylan chose the name of the album after a very long American highway.

This road, U.S. Highway 61, starts in Minnesota near his birthplace of Duluth. It travels all the way down to New Orleans. The route passes through many places known for blues music, like Memphis and the Mississippi Delta. Dylan felt a deep connection to this road. He said it felt like it was in his blood. He even had to fight with his record company to keep the name.

There are many important facts about the songs on this album. The song "Like a Rolling Stone" was a huge hit in many countries. It reached number two on the Billboard charts in the United States. The album also reached number three in the US and number four in the UK. One song, "Desolation Row," is a very long ballad that lasts 11 minutes. To finish that song, a musician named Charlie McCoy visited the studio to play guitar. These specific details helped make the album feel unique and powerful.

Today, people still talk about this album as a masterpiece.
