"Imagine" is a famous song written by the English musician John Lennon.

It is a piano ballad, which is a gentle song led by the piano. The song asks listeners to dream of a world filled with peace. Lennon's lyrics suggest a world without borders between nations or economic greed. He also asks us to imagine life without religious divisions. The song carries a deep message of global harmony. Many people find great meaning in these hopeful words.

Creating the song involved several important steps and people. Lennon finished writing the music on a Steinway piano in 1971.

He recorded the song at his home studio in Tittenhurst Park, England. Later, he added extra sounds, called overdubs, in New York City. Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Phil Spector worked together to produce the track. The final recording features Lennon on vocals and piano. It also includes bass guitar, drums, and a group of string players.

History shows that the song's ideas came from many places. Lennon said much of the concept and lyrics came from his wife, Yoko Ono. Her book, "Grapefruit," contained poems that inspired the song. For example, one poem was titled "Cloud Piece." Lennon also mentioned a prayer book given to him by Dick Gregory. Some historians think a Cree grandmother's words might have also played a part. In 2017, Yoko Ono officially received credit for co-writing the song.

Since its release, "Imagine" has reached many big milestones. It was the best-selling single of Lennon's solo career. In the United States, it reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also hit number one on the charts in Canada. It has sold more than 1.7 million copies in the United Kingdom alone. Because it is so important, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation. This means the song is kept in the United States National Recording Registry.

Today, the song connects to many famous events and artists. It is often played during the New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square. The song was also featured during the 2012 Summer Olympics. Many famous singers have performed it, including Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder. It has even been used in the opening of the 2022 Winter Olympics. Even though the lyrics caused some controversy, the song remains a symbol of unity.

It continues to shape the world of music.
