They have hard bodies made of glass. This glass comes from silica. Silica is a material found in seawater.

Their bodies are built from tiny, sharp parts called spicules. These spicules join together to make a strong frame. This frame looks like a lattice, or a net.

These sponges are often cup-shaped. They can be white or orange. Most live in very deep water. Some live in the Antarctic or the North Pacific. They can grow quite large. Many reach 32 centimeters. Some grow to 1 meter long.

These sponges can live for a very long time. Some may live for 15,000 years.

Glass sponges use a unique way to move signals. They send electrical impulses through their bodies. This helps them react to things around them. For example, they can sense sediment. This tells them to stop feeding. Some sponges also build reefs. These reefs help many other sea creatures live.
