Hesiod was a major poet from Ancient Greece.

Historians believe he was active between 750 and 650 BC. This was roughly the same era as the poet Homer. Hesiod is highly significant in Western literature. He is considered the first written poet to use an individual persona. This means he acted as a character within his own work. He shared personal details and his own voice with his audience.

His surviving works include two very different types of poems. The first is the *Theogony*. This poem explains the origins of the gods and their lineages. It describes the events that allowed Zeus to rise to power. The second major work is *Works and Days*. This poem is didactic, meaning it is intended to teach. It describes the five Ages of Man and offers wisdom. It also includes famous myths, such as the story of Pandora's box.

According to legend, Hesiod received his poetic inspiration from the Muses. These goddesses appeared to him while he was pasturing sheep on Mount Helicon.

They presented him with a laurel staff to signify his poetic authority. This detail is important to scholars. Most professional singers, known as rhapsodes, carried a lyre, which is a stringed instrument. Because Hesiod held a staff, scholars infer he was not a professionally trained rhapsode.

Much of Hesiod's life is tied to the small hamlet of Ascra. This place was located in Boeotia near the foot of Mount Helicon. Hesiod described Ascra as a "cursed place." He noted it was cruel in winter and hard in summer. His father had migrated from Cyme in Aeolis to settle there. This move was unusual because it was the opposite direction of most migrations. His father may have been a merchant who traveled by sea.

Hesiod's writing provides deep insight into ancient life. He wrote about his personal struggles, such as a lawsuit with his brother, Perses. This dispute involved their father's inheritance and corrupt local authorities. His work also describes the routines of prosperous farmers. He mentions the use of servants, ploughmen, and working teams of oxen and mules. Because of this, modern scholars use him to study early economic thought. He also provides information on farming techniques and ancient astronomy.

There are different theories regarding how his poems were preserved. Some scholars believe he wrote his poems down or dictated them. This might have helped his memory or compensated for a lack of professional training. One ancient source claims a lead tablet held his works. Others suggest the poems were passed down through oral transmission. This might explain why some texts show large-scale changes. His personality in the poems is described as argumentative, suspicious, and frugal.

Finally, the exact circumstances of his death remain a mystery. Different traditions offer conflicting accounts of his end. One tradition says an oracle predicted he would die in Nemea. He reportedly fled to Locris, where he died at a temple. Another tradition claims he is buried in Orchomenus. In this version, villagers collected his ashes and honored them in the town center. These stories show how much his legacy mattered to the people of Greece.
