Herpes simplex encephalitis

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A germ called a virus can cause a brain illness. This is called herpes encephalitis. Most cases come from the HSV-1 virus. This is the same germ that causes cold sores.

People might feel confused or have a fever. They may also have seizures. Some people lose their sense of smell. They might struggle to read, write, or speak. This happens because the virus affects the temporal lobes. These are parts of the brain near the sides.

Doctors use scans like an MRI to look inside. An MRI is a tool that takes pictures of the body. They also use a lumbar puncture. This is a test where they check fluid from the spine. This helps them find the virus.

Doctors give a medicine called acyclovir to help. It is best to start this medicine fast. If people do not get medicine, it can be very deadly. Even with medicine, some people may have brain damage. About 20 percent of treated people recover well.
