It is caused by a tiny germ called a virus. Most cold sores come from the herpes simplex virus type 1. This virus is very common. Many people get it before they turn 20 years old.

Once the virus enters your body, it never leaves. It moves to your nerves to hide. We call this being latent, which means it is sleeping. Sometimes, the virus wakes up. It travels down the nerve to the skin. This can be caused by sunlight, fever, or stress.

When the virus wakes up, you might feel a tingle. Soon, small, fluid-filled blisters appear. These blisters can be painful. They may break open and form a crust or scab. This part is very contagious. You can spread the virus by kissing or sharing items.

Most sores heal in about ten days. You can use special creams to help. Some creams help with pain. Other medicines can help the sore heal faster. It is important to wash your hands often to stay safe.
