Herbert Needleman was a doctor for children. He was also a researcher. He spent his life studying lead. Lead is a metal that can be a poison.

In the 1970s, Herbert did a big study. He looked at children's teeth. He found that even small amounts of lead can hurt a child's brain. This can make it hard for kids to learn. It can also make it hard for them to pay attention. He found that lead can change how children behave.

His work helped change many laws. Because of his research, the government took lead out of gasoline. They also banned lead from indoor paint. This helped make homes and air much safer. In the United States, lead poisoning in children went down a lot by the early 1990s.

Some people in the lead industry did not like his work. They attacked his ideas. There were even legal fights about his research. However, Herbert stayed focused on helping kids. He wanted parents to know how to keep their children safe from toxins. He died in 2017.
