Heraclitus was a famous thinker from ancient Greece.

Heraclitus had very big ideas about how the world works. He believed that everything is always changing. He called this constant change "flux."

We do not know a great deal about his life. Most of what we know comes from a writer named Diogenes Laërtius. Heraclitus wrote only one book, which was likely called "On Nature." Most of this book is lost to time. Today, we only have small pieces called fragments. These fragments were found in the writings of other authors. Some people say he was a very lonely and sad man. Because of this, they called him "the weeping philosopher."

His writing style was very unique and difficult.
Heraclitus was a pre-Socratic philosopher from the Greek city of Ephesus.

Heraclitus is best known for his ideas about change and opposites. He believed the world was in a constant state of flux. This means everything is always moving or becoming something new. He famously said, "Everything flows."

His philosophy focused on the unity of opposites. This is the idea that opposing forces actually work together. He saw harmony and justice within strife. For example, he noted that the way up and the way down are the same. He believed that beginning and end meet on a circle's circumference. Some scholars, including Aristotle, suggested Heraclitus was a dialetheist. This means he might have denied the law of noncontradiction. This principle usually states that something cannot be both true and false at once.
We know very little about Heraclitus's actual life. Most of our information comes from the writer Diogenes Laërtius. Some stories suggest Heraclitus was from an aristocratic family. He may have given up a hereditary title of "king" to his brother. However, many ancient stories might be later fabrications. He was often described as a solitary and arrogant man. Some called him a misanthrope, which means someone who dislikes people. Because of his perceived sadness, he was called "the weeping philosopher." This stood in contrast to Democritus, who was "the laughing philosopher."
Heraclitus wrote a single work, likely titled "On Nature." He reportedly deposited this book in the Artemision, a temple in Ephesus.
His style was often called "obscure" or "dark."
Heraclitus's ideas created a major contrast in ancient thought. He focused on constant change and flux. This was the opposite of Parmenides, who believed reality was static and unchanging.
