Unfortunately, almost none of his original work survives today. Only one single fragment of his writing remains. We know about his ideas through later writers like Aristotle and Theophrastus. These thinkers recorded his theories long after he died. Because no documents provide exact dates for his work, establishing a perfect timeline is impossible. However, historical records help us piece together his life and his massive impact.

One of his most important ideas was the concept of the *apeiron*.

The word *apeiron* means the infinite, the boundless, or the unlimited. Anaximander proposed this as the *archē*, or the first principle of all things. His teacher, Thales, believed that water was the primary substance of the universe. Anaximander disagreed with this specific idea. He argued that the source of everything must be something different from the known elements. He believed the *apeiron* was an endless, primordial mass. This substance was eternal and ageless, meaning it did not experience decay. It constantly produced the materials needed to create the heavens and the worlds.

Anaximander also believed that nature is ruled by laws. He compared these natural laws to the rules that govern human societies. He suggested that nature maintains a specific balance. If something disturbs this balance, it will not last for long.

This idea of a cosmic order was a major shift in thinking. Instead of seeing the world as controlled by the whims of gods, he saw it as a system. He believed the universe followed a geometric order rather than a monarchic one. This meant the Earth stayed in place because of balance. He claimed the Earth sat at the center of the universe. It remained stable because it was in a state of equilibrium.

Beyond philosophy, Anaximander made many contributions to other scientific fields. In astronomy, he attempted to describe how celestial bodies move in relation to the Earth.
