Hepatology is a special branch of medicine. It focuses on how certain organs work. These organs are the liver and the gallbladder. They also include the pancreas and the biliary tree. The biliary tree is a group of tubes.

Doctors who study these parts are called hepatologists. They help manage many different health problems. This work is very important for keeping people healthy.

Doctors help patients when these organs get sick. One way is through blood tests. These tests can show if there is liver disease.

Another way is by looking at the abdomen. Sometimes the belly swells with fluid. This is called ascites. This happens when the liver is not working well. Doctors might also use a tool called an ERCP. This helps them look at the biliary tree. It helps them find and fix problems in the tubes.

People have studied these organs for a very long time. Ancient Egyptian mummies show signs of liver damage.

Long ago, a man named Galen thought the liver was the main organ. In 1770, Antoine Portal studied bleeding in the throat. In 1844, Gabriel Valentin found that pancreatic juices help digest food. Many big changes happened in the last 50 years. This is when we learned much more about how these parts work.

Science has led to many amazing discoveries. In 1963, Dr. Thomas E. Starzl did the first human liver transplant. This was a huge step for medicine.

In 1966, Baruch Blumberg found the hepatitis B virus. He later made a vaccine for it in 1969. He won a Nobel Prize in 1976 for this work. In 1989, scientists identified the hepatitis C virus. By 1992, a new blood test could find it. These facts help doctors protect many people.

Understanding hepatology helps us see how our bodies stay balanced. Viruses like hepatitis B can affect many people. More than two billion people have had this virus.

About 350 million people are persistent carriers. Other things like alcohol can also cause liver damage. This can lead to a disease called cirrhosis. Doctors work together to help with these hard jobs. They use everything they know to keep our bodies running smoothly.
