Henry grew up to be a leader with great political and military skill.

Henry used his power to build many new things across his lands. He was a great founder of cities in Northern Germany and Bavaria. He started the cities of Munich in 1157 and Lübeck in 1159. He also helped develop places like Augsburg, Kassel, and Lüneburg. In his capital city of Brunswick, he built a large church called St Blaise. He also built the Dankwarderode Castle to show his strength.

In 1166, he placed a bronze lion statue in the castle courtyard. This was the first bronze statue north of the Alps.

Much of Henry's success came from his relationship with Frederick Barbarossa. Frederick was Henry's cousin and the Holy Roman Emperor. Henry helped Frederick win the throne in 1152. Because of this help, Frederick gave Henry the Dukedom of Bavaria in 1156.

Together, they were the two main leaders in a long political struggle. At his peak, Henry ruled a massive area of territory. His lands stretched from the North and Baltic seas all the way to the Alps. He ruled from Westphalia to Pomerania.

However, Henry and Frederick eventually had a serious disagreement. In 1176, Frederick invaded Italy to fight the Lombard League. Henry refused to send military help to his cousin during this time. This made Frederick very angry and resentful. In 1180, a court of bishops and princes took Henry's lands away. They declared him an outlaw and stripped him of Saxony and Bavaria.

Henry had to leave Germany and live in exile in southern England. He lived there for three years before he was allowed to return.

Even after losing his power, Henry remained an important figure in history. He eventually returned to his smaller lands around Brunswick. He spent his final years supporting art and building beautiful things. He died on August 6, 1195. Many people still tell stories about him today through legends. Some tales tell of a fictional journey he took to the Holy Land. These stories often feature his famous lion symbol. He remains a very famous person from this early era.
