He moved from a modest childhood in Scotland to a busy medical career in Japan. 
Faulds began his journey with a difficult start in Beith, North Ayrshire. He had to leave school at age 13 to work as a clerk. This job helped support his family during those early years. Later, he pursued higher education at Glasgow University. He studied mathematics, logic, and the classics there. He then attended Anderson's College to study medicine. Eventually, he earned his official physician's license. After graduating, he became a medical missionary for the Church of Scotland.
In 1871, Faulds traveled to British India for two years. He worked at a hospital for the poor in Darjeeling. On July 23, 1873, he received an appointment to start a mission in Japan. He married Isabella Wilson in September and moved to Japan that December. In 1874, he established the first English-speaking mission in the country. He built a hospital and a facility for training Japanese medical students. He also introduced antiseptic methods to local surgeons. These methods helped keep surgical tools and environments clean to prevent infection.
Faulds was very active in Japanese society. In 1875, he helped found the Rakuzenkai, which was Japan's first society for the blind. He also helped establish a school for the blind in 1880. His medical work saved many lives during various health crises. He helped stop a rabies epidemic caused by infected mice. He also worked to stop the spread of cholera. He even cured a plague that was affecting local carp. By 1882, his Tsukiji Hospital in Tokyo treated 15,000 patients every year. 
His discovery of fingerprinting happened by chance during an archaeological dig. He was accompanying an American archaeologist named Edward S. Morse. Faulds noticed delicate impressions left by craftsmen on ancient clay fragments. This led him to examine his own fingertips and those of his friends. He became convinced that the pattern of ridges was unique to every person. He proved this theory during a real crime. After his hospital was broken into, the police arrested a staff member. Faulds compared the fingerprints at the scene to the suspect's prints. The patterns were different, so the police released the innocent man.
Faulds faced many challenges when trying to share his scientific ideas. He wrote a paper on the subject in the journal Nature in 1880. He also reached out to the famous naturalist Charles Darwin. Darwin declined to work on the idea but passed it to his relative, Francis Galton. Galton later studied fingerprints and helped make the science accepted in courts. However, Galton did not give Faulds proper credit for his initial work. This caused a long controversy regarding who truly invented modern forensic fingerprinting.
Another man named Sir William Herschel also claimed to use fingerprints. Herschel was a British civil servant working in India. He wrote to Nature in 1880, stating he used prints as a form of identification since 1860. However, Herschel did not discuss their use in forensic science. Faulds engaged in a bitter argument with Herschel for many years. In 1894, Faulds demanded proof that Herschel had used prints officially. Faulds later wrote many books and pamphlets to argue that he had been cheated of credit. These works were published from 1905 onward.
Faulds returned to Britain in 1886 after a quarrel with his missionary society. He offered his fingerprinting concept to Scotland Yard. They dismissed his idea, likely because he lacked the extensive evidence required. They needed more proof that prints were durable, unique, and classifiable. Faulds then worked as a police surgeon in London and Fenton. He died in 1930 at the age of 86. He felt bitter because he lacked recognition for his discoveries. Today, many plaques in Scotland and Japan honor his scientific legacy.
