The Hengduan Mountains are in southwest China.

The mountains have many different parts. The Daxue Mountains are in the east. They hold Mount Gongga. This is the highest peak in the whole group. Much of the land is covered in conifer forests. These are woods filled with cone-bearing trees. The mountains are home to many rare living things. You might find the giant panda in the eastern ranges. Other animals like deer and primates live here too. The area has many types of plants and woods. This makes it a very important place for nature.
The Hengduan Mountains are a huge group of mountain ranges in southwest China.

Deep river valleys cut through these mountain ranges. These valleys carry some of the biggest rivers in Southeast Asia. The Yangtze, the Mekong, and the Salween rivers all flow through here. Because these three rivers run so close together, the area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The mountains are made of many different ranges. The westernmost part includes the Nu Mountains and the Taniantaweng Mountains. Moving east, you find the Mangkam, Ninchin, and Yun ranges. The Yulong Mountains are also part of this system. The third section is known as the Shaluli Mountains. These mountains sit between the Yangtze and Yalong Rivers. The easternmost core is the Daxue Mountains. This range is home to Mount Gongga. It is the highest peak in the whole Hengduan group.
There are many different types of homes for living things here. The mountains have habitats ranging from subtropical to temperate. Much of the land is covered in subalpine conifer forests. These are woods filled with trees that grow cones.
Many rare animals call these mountains home. The eastern ranges are where you might find the giant panda.
The Hengduan Mountains are a complex system of mountain ranges in southwest China.

The formation of these mountains is a result of massive geological forces. The significant vertical relief originated from a collision between the Indian subcontinent and the Eurasian Plate. This tectonic movement pushed the earth upward to create high peaks. Following this uplift, major rivers began to drain the eastern Tibetan Plateau. These rivers carved deep valleys through the rising landscape. Today, the Yangtze, Mekong, and Salween rivers flow through these mountains. This unique layout is recognized as the Three Parallel Rivers UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Hengduan system consists of several distinct component ranges. The westernmost primary range sits between the Salween (Nu) and Mekong (Lancang) Rivers. This range includes the Taniantaweng Mountains in the north and the Nu Mountains in the south. A notable subrange here is the Meili Snow Mountains, which features the peak Kawagebo. Moving east, the next section runs between the Mekong and the Yangtze (Jinsha) Rivers. This area contains the Mangkam, Ninchin, and Yun ranges. The Yulong Mountains are also found here, featuring the Shanzidou peak of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
Further east, the mountain system includes the section between the Yangtze and Yalong Rivers. This area is known mostly as the Shaluli Mountains. It also contains the northernmost Chola Mountains. The Ge'nyen Massif serves as the highest point of this specific section. The easternmost core range is the Daxue Mountains, located between the Yalong and Dadu Rivers. This range is dominated by Mount Gongga. This peak is the highest in the entire Hengduan group. It is also the highest peak located east of the Himalayas.
Because of the varying heights, the mountains support many different biomes. A biome is a large area characterized by specific plants and animals. The mountains feature habitats ranging from subtropical to temperate and montane. Much of the region is covered by subalpine conifer forests. These are part of the Temperate coniferous forests biome. The mountains also include the Southeast Tibet shrub and meadows at higher elevations. In the south, the mountains transition into the Yunnan Plateau subtropical evergreen forests.
The biological diversity in this region is exceptionally high. This complexity comes from dense, pristine forests and relative isolation. Most of the area remained free from glaciation during the ice ages. This allowed species to survive and evolve in a stable environment. The Nujiang Langcang Gorge contains alpine conifer and mixed forests. The Qionglai-Minshan conifer forests sit along the edge of the Sichuan Basin. Even the lowest valleys of the Jinsha and Nu rivers are unique. The Chinese government classifies these southern valley environments as tropical savanna.
Many rare and endangered species rely on these specific habitats. The easternmost ranges provide a home for the giant panda. Other native species include the Chinese yew, which is a rare plant. Various types of deer and primates also inhabit the forests. The mountains serve as a vital ecological corridor in Asia. By connecting different plateaus and hosting diverse ecoregions, they maintain a complex web of life. This makes the Hengduan Mountains a critical area for global biodiversity.
