It is part of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. The islands sit in the Heligoland Bight. They are quite far from the German mainland. They sit about 70 kilometers from Cuxhaven.

The islands are made of two main parts. The first is the main island, which is shaped like a triangle. The second island is called Düne. It is smaller and lower than the main island. Düne has sandy beaches and an airfield.

These two islands were actually one until 1720. A big storm flood broke the connection between them.

The main island has a very interesting shape. It is divided into three different levels. The first is the Lower Land at sea level. This is where the harbor is located.

The second part is called the Upper Land. This is a high plateau.

Between these two parts is the Middle Land. The island also has high cliffs in many places. The ground drops deep underwater near the coast. One of the most famous sights is a tall rock. It is called Long Anna or Tall Anna.

Many different countries have ruled these islands over time. They were once possessions of Denmark. Then, Great Britain ruled them from 1807 to 1890.

In 1890, the islands became part of Germany. After World War II, the United Kingdom ruled them again. This lasted until 1952 when they went back to West Germany.

People have lived there since prehistoric times. Archaeologists have found very old flint tools in the sea nearby. They even found old copper plates near the island.

These items show that people used the islands a long time ago.

The name Heligoland has many possible meanings. Some people think it means "Holy Land."

Others think it comes from a Frisian word for a salt marsh island. In the 19th century, scholars argued about the name. One idea is that it means "high land." The local people are ethnic Frisians. They speak a special dialect called Heligolandic.

In 1841, a man named August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote lyrics here. These lyrics became the national anthem of Germany. The islands also became a popular place for tourists in 1826. Many artists and writers loved to visit the island.

Heligoland has been important for many different reasons. It was a place to study how birds move during migration.

Scientists set up a biological station there in 1892. The island was also a major naval base for Germany. During the wars, the islands were very busy with military activity.

A scientist named Werner Heisenberg even worked there in 1925. While on the island, he came up with ideas for quantum theory. This is a very important part of how we understand science today. Today, the main island has a population of about 1,127 people. It is a place where many sailing yachts visit the harbor.
