Heinrich Rohrer was a famous Swiss physicist. He spent his life studying how the physical world works. He is best known for helping to invent a special tool. This tool is called the scanning tunneling microscope, or STM. It allows scientists to see things that are very tiny. This invention changed how we look at the smallest parts of our world.

To understand his work, think about how hard it is to stay still. When Rohrer was a student, his tools were very sensitive. They could feel even the tiniest shakes or vibrations. Because of this, he often did his research at night. He waited until the city was asleep and quiet. This helped his measurements stay steady and true.

Rohrer had a long and busy career in science. He was born in Buchs, Switzerland, in 1933. He studied at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Later, he joined the IBM Research Laboratory in Rüschlikon in 1963. He worked there for many years. He even led the physics department at IBM from 1986 to 1988.

His most famous work led to a very big honor. In 1986, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He shared this prize with Gerd Binnig. They won it for designing the STM. Ernst Ruska also received a share of the prize. This award is one of the highest honors in science.

Many people remember his name through special awards today. The Heinrich Rohrer Medal is given out every three years. This medal is presented by the Surface Science Society of Japan. Other groups like IBM Research help give it too. This keeps his memory alive in the world of science. He passed away in 2013 at his home in Wollerau.
