Heinrich Böll was a famous German writer.

He wrote many books, short stories, and plays. His work was put into more than 30 languages.

Böll lived through World War II. This hard time changed him. He became a pacifist, which means he wanted peace. He often said, "never war again." His stories often showed how regular people struggled during war and change. Some people called him the "conscience of the nation." They said this because he wrote about difficult truths.

Böll won many big awards. In 1972, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. This is a very special prize for writers. He also led a group for writers called PEN International.

He loved the country of Ireland. He and his wife had a home there. Now, artists use his Irish cottage as a place to work. He also helped a writer named Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Böll even suggested Solzhenitsyn should win a Nobel Prize. Böll's life was full of big ideas and important stories.
