Have you ever seen a bright spot near your shadow?

This is called a Heiligenschein. Some people call it a hotspot. It happens when there is dew on the ground. Dew is made of tiny water drops. These drops are shaped like spheres. A sphere is a round shape like a ball.

These drops act like lenses. A lens is a part that focuses light. The light goes through the drop. It hits the surface behind the drop. Then the light bounces back. The water drop catches that light. It sends the light back to you. This works like a cat's eye retroreflector. A retroreflector is a tool that sends light back to its source. This effect is brightest near the antisolar point. This is the spot directly opposite the sun. An artist named Benvenuto Cellini wrote about this in 1562. He called it Cellini's halo. The light is brightest when it hits the plant surface. This happens when drops sit on tiny plant hairs.
