About 10,000 students joined the peaceful march. But the police arrived and used force. The police fired guns at the children. Hector was shot and he died at age 12. A photographer named Sam Nzima took a famous photo. It showed a man carrying Hector. Hector's sister ran next to them. This photo was shown to the whole world. Many people died or were hurt that day. Now, a museum stands near where it happened. It is the Hector Pieterson Museum. It honors Hector and other students. Hector's sister, Antoinette, works there as a guide.
