Its name means "north of the river" because it sits north of the Yellow River. The province is very diverse in its landscape. It is the only province in China with plateaus, mountains, hills, shorelines, plains, and lakes. Most of the central and southern areas sit on the flat North China Plain. To the west, the Taihang Mountains rise up. In the north, the Yan Mountains run through the land.

The weather follows a monsoon pattern. This means the seasons feel very different. Winters are typically cold and dry. Summers are hot and humid, with most of the rain falling during these months.

History has shaped Hebei for thousands of years. Very early humans, known as Peking Man, lived on these plains long ago. Ancient myths also say that famous leaders lived in this area. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, the states of Yan and Zhao ruled here.

The region has had many different names over time. It was called Zhongshu during the Yuan dynasty. Later, it was known as Zhili during the Qing dynasty. The modern name, Hebei, was chosen in 1928.

Today, Hebei is a very busy and important place. It is China's sixth-most populous province with over 75 million people. Most people there are Han Chinese, but there are also Manchu, Hui, and Mongol groups.

The province is famous for making steel and growing food. It is the top steel producer in China. Hebei also holds five UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include the Great Wall of China and the Grand Canal. You can also visit the Eastern and Western Qing tombs.

Hebei is closely linked to the big cities around it. It completely surrounds the cities of Beijing and Tianjin on land. Together, Hebei, Beijing, and Tianjin form a massive area called the Jing-Jin-Ji megalopolis.
