The British Avro Lancaster, introduced in 1942, could routinely deliver payloads of 14,000 pounds and had a range of 1,500 miles. The American B-29 Superfortress arrived in 1944 and delivered payloads exceeding 20,000 pounds with a range of 3,250 miles. By the late 1950s, the jet-powered Boeing B-52 Stratofortress could travel at speeds up to 650 miles per hour. This B-52 could deliver a 70,000-pound payload over a combat radius of 8,500 miles. 
Strategic bombing theory became a major part of military planning during the 20th century. One major belief was that "the bomber will always get through" because fighters could not catch them. Another idea was that bombing industrial targets like oil refineries and coal mines could win wars. This theory was seen in the firebombing of Japanese cities and the use of atomic bombs. In August 1945, B-29s dropped atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 
Technological shifts eventually moved the heavy bomber away from its central role. The arrival of intercontinental ballistic missiles and ballistic missile submarines changed how nations deliver nuclear weapons. Additionally, the invention of precision-guided munitions, often called "smart bombs," allowed smaller planes to be more accurate. These advancements meant that massive aircraft were no longer always necessary for strategic warfare. However, heavy bombers remained useful for conventional weapons in regional conflicts, such as the B-52s used in the Vietnam War.
Today, the landscape of heavy bombers is much smaller than it was during the World War II era. Only the air forces of the United States, Russia, and China currently operate these massive aircraft.
