Headphones are a special tool for listening to sound privately.

They are electroacoustic transducers, which is a fancy way to say they turn electrical signals into sound. Unlike a loudspeaker that fills a whole room with noise, headphones sit on or around your head. This lets just one person hear the audio. You might know them as earphones or even "cans."

There are many styles to choose from today. Some are circumaural, meaning they have large pads that go all the way around your ears. Others are supra-aural, which means they sit right on top of your ears. You can also use earbuds that plug into your ear canal, or bone conduction headphones that rest in front of your ears.

How do these devices actually make sound?

Many early models used something called moving iron drivers. This works through a simple step-by-step process. First, an electrical current flows through tiny coils of wire. These coils are wound around the poles of a permanent magnet. This current changes the magnetic field of the magnet. That changing field exerts a force on a flexible steel diaphragm. The force makes the diaphragm vibrate very quickly. These vibrations create the sound waves that you hear in your ears.

People have been developing headphones for a long time.

In the 1880s, telephone switchboard operators needed to keep their hands free. They used a single earpiece held by a clamp. By the 1890s, a British company called Electrophone made a device with two earpieces. These were huge and connected below the chin with a long rod. In 1891, a French engineer named Ernest Mercadier even patented in-ear headphones. Later, in 1902, innovators like Lee de Forest used two receivers together. By 1909, the Holtzer-Cabot Company began making headphones for wireless operators.

Many important inventions changed how we use headphones.

In 1910, Nathaniel Baldwin invented a headset prototype for the U.S. Navy. He was inspired because he could not hear sermons in church! In 1958, John C. Koss from Milwaukee made the first stereo headphones. Smaller earbuds became popular after the 1954 release of the Regency TR-1 transistor radio. Many people use a 3.5 mm jack to plug in their devices. This type of connector became very famous because of the Walkman in 1979.

Today, we also use wireless technology like Bluetooth to send sound through radio waves.

Headphones are used in many different parts of our lives.

Some people use a headset, which is a headphone with a built-in microphone. Aircraft pilots and call center workers use these to talk clearly. Disc jockeys, or DJs, use them to hear the next song before the audience does. Audio engineers use them to mix music for live concerts or recordings. Even doctors use special headphones for audiometric testing to check how well people hear. Whether you are playing a video game or listening to music on a bus, headphones connect you to your favorite sounds.
