Many early models used something called moving iron drivers. This works through a simple step-by-step process. First, an electrical current flows through tiny coils of wire. These coils are wound around the poles of a permanent magnet. This current changes the magnetic field of the magnet. That changing field exerts a force on a flexible steel diaphragm. The force makes the diaphragm vibrate very quickly. These vibrations create the sound waves that you hear in your ears.
