Head shake

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

You can talk without using any words. You can do this with a head shake. This is when you turn your head side to side.

Most people use this to say no. It can show you do not agree. It can also mean you do not want something. Sometimes, a slow shake shows you are upset. Many places use it this way. This includes Africa, Europe, and North America. It is also common in South America and Asia.

But be careful when you travel! In some places, the meaning flips. In Bulgaria and southern Albania, a shake means yes. In those lands, a nod means no. This is the opposite of most other places.

Why do we do this? Charles Darwin studied this a long time ago. He wrote about it in 1872. He asked people all over the world for help. He saw that many groups use this sign. He also looked at how babies act. A hungry baby moves their head up and down. They turn their head side to side to say no to milk.
