Head

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A head is a very important part of many living things. It usually holds the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. These parts help an animal sense the world through sight, hearing, smell, and taste.

Some very simple animals do not have a head at all. However, many animals that are bilaterally symmetric do have them. This means they have a left and right side that match.

Heads often form through a process called cephalization. This is a way that animals evolve to group important parts together. In these animals, nervous tissue gathers at the front of the body. This area is responsible for processing information.

During evolution, sense organs and feeding parts also move to this front area. This collection of parts creates the head. As cephalization grows, the head can take in more segments from the body.

Scientists have studied how these structures changed over a long time. Cephalization in certain animals began about 555 million years ago. In the 1980s, experts proposed the "new head hypothesis." This idea suggests the vertebrate head is a new way of growing. It comes from the emergence of things called neural crest and cranial placodes.

In 2014, researchers found tissue in lancelets that looked like the cartilage in a vertebrate skull. This helps us understand how the head might have formed.

Human heads are made of several specific bones. The skull includes a brain case and a facial skeleton. The brain case has eight bones that protect the brain. The facial skeleton has fourteen bones, including the mandible or jawbone.

Insects have different head parts like antennae and compound eyes. Some insects have eyes made of many small faces. Their mouths have parts like a labrum, which is an upper lip. They also have mandibles and a labium, which is a lower lip.

People use the idea of a head in many ways. Artists like Leonardo da Vinci used grids to draw perfect faces. In some cultures, animal heads are used for food. For example, Cabeza is a Mexican dish made from roasted livestock heads.

You might also hear the phrase "big-headed" to describe someone. This means they are overly full of themselves. There are many other common sayings about heads in our language.
