It marks the end of Shabbat. It also marks the end of some big holidays. This ritual helps people move from a holy day to a new week.

The ceremony uses many senses. People smell sweet spices called besamim. Some groups use cloves for this. Others use plants that smell good. People also look at a special braided candle. This candle has many wicks. Many people hold their hands up to the light. They look at the glow on their fingernails.

A cup of wine or grape juice is used too. People say blessings over the wine, the spices, and the light. They also say a blessing to separate the holy from the everyday. After the ceremony, people often sing songs. They might also say "Have a good week" to each other. This ceremony is a way to honor the holy time that just ended.
