She achieved fame through her work on stage, radio, and screen. Jacques was celebrated for her extraordinary versatility in performing. She could portray larger-than-life comedic characters with great impact. At the same time, she maintained a sense of humanity in her roles. This balance allowed her to connect deeply with her audiences. Her career spanned several decades of British entertainment history.

Jacques's journey toward professional acting began with diverse life experiences. During the Second World War, she served as a nurse. She worked in a mobile unit in London during the Blitz. Later, she worked as a welder in a north London factory.

These real-world roles later informed her acting work. In the 1950 film Chance of a Lifetime, she played a welder named Alice. She used her actual welding experience to negotiate a higher fee. She argued that she knew exactly how difficult the labor was.

Her formal career started in 1944 at the Players' Theatre in London.

She performed in music hall revues and Victorian-style pantomimes. At this venue, she developed her early stage persona. She often played a bossy yet vulnerable fairy queen. This period acted as a practical drama school for her. She also learned to direct, write lyrics, and adapt plays. She even co-adapted pantomimes like Ali Baba and the Thirty-nine Thieves.

Radio brought Jacques to national prominence through several popular series. In 1947, she joined the BBC show It's That Man Again (ITMA). She played the character Sophie Tuckshop, a greedy schoolgirl. Sophie was known for telling stories of epic binges. Jacques was paid ten guineas for each episode of this series. Later, she appeared on the radio show Educating Archie. This program featured the ventriloquist's dummy Archie Andrews. She worked alongside many famous performers during this era.

Jacques became a household name through her cinematic and television work. From 1958 to 1974, she appeared in 14 Carry On films.

In these films, she frequently played strict, no-nonsense characters. A common role for her was the formidable hospital matron. On television, she maintained a long partnership with Eric Sykes. They co-starred in the long-running series Sykes and Sykes. These performances made them staples of British television culture.

Her personal life included significant relationships and challenges. She married the actor John Le Mesurier in 1949. They remained married until their divorce in 1965. This separation followed a five-year affair Jacques had with another man. Jacques also faced health struggles related to her weight. Her weight rose to nearly 20 stone following her separation. She eventually died of a heart attack on 6 October 1980. She was 58 years old at the time of her death.

Jacques's legacy is defined by her ability to master different comedic modes. Her biographer, Frances Gray, noted her talent for large-scale comedy. This talent never lost its connection to human feelings. She could transition from broad comedy to more subtle acting. This skill made her a vital part of the British comedy landscape. Her work in radio, film, and television continues to be remembered. She remains a significant figure in the history of English performance.
