Harlem Globetrotters

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Harlem Globetrotters are a famous American exhibition basketball team. They are unique because they combine high-level athleticism with theater, comedy, and entertainment. Rather than focusing solely on winning, the team aims to wow audiences through spectacular skill. Their style of play includes incredible coordination and expert ball handling. Players might juggle multiple basketballs between teammates or spin them on their fingertips. They also perform unusually difficult shots to delight the crowd.

While much of their performance is planned, the games are not entirely scripted. The team incorporates about 20 to 30 percent of "real" basketball into their shows. This means that while they perform hijinks, they still play a serious game when they have possession of the ball. This balance requires immense skill. In fact, the team once lost a real game 100-99 in overtime to the New Jersey Reds in 1971. During that game, the Globetrotters lost track of the score and faced a 12-point deficit. They eventually took a one-point lead, but the Reds hit a game-winner in the final seconds.

The team's modern identity grew from a series of historical shifts. Originally, the group began in 1926 in Chicago at the Giles American Legion Post #87. They were first known as the Savoy Big Five, performing at the Savoy Ballroom. In 1928, a dispute caused several players to leave and form a team called the "Globe Trotters." Abe Saperstein soon became involved as a coach, manager, and promoter. By 1929, he was touring with the "New York Harlem Globe Trotters." Saperstein chose the name "Harlem" to honor the center of Black American culture. He used "Globetrotter" to suggest the team would travel to international venues.

As the team evolved, it moved from pure sports into the world of entertainment. This shift is credited to Reece "Goose" Tatum, who joined the squad in 1941. He helped introduce the comic routines that define their act today. To support these tours, the team often plays against specific opponents. In 1952, Louis "Red" Klotz created the Washington Generals to accompany them. The Generals act as "stooges," meaning they are deliberately ineffective to help the Globetrotters shine. The Generals have served as the primary opponents for many years, appearing in various forms between 1953 and the present day.

The Globetrotters have achieved massive global significance through their travels. They have played more than 26,000 exhibition games across 124 countries and territories. In 1959, they traveled to Moscow, Russia, to play nine games at Lenin Central Stadium. During this trip, the team included the legendary Wilt Chamberlain. The Russian audience was initially confused by the "tricks," but the games helped improve U.S.–Russian relations. The Soviet government even paid the team the equivalent of $4,000 per game.

Many legendary athletes have passed through the Globetrotters' roster. Wilt Chamberlain played for the team from 1958 to 1959. In 1985, the team broke new ground by signing its first female player, Lynette Woodard. The team also celebrates its history by retiring the jersey numbers of great players. Eight players have been honored, including Marques Haynes and Meadowlark Lemon. The team has even recognized famous figures as honorary members. These include Nelson Mandela, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and even Pope Francis.

Today, the team is owned by Herschend Family Entertainment. They continue to find new ways to grow and reach audiences. Since 2007, they have held an annual draft to find players who fit their specific mold. This draft occurs just a few days before the NBA draft. The team has also explored new professional connections, such as filing a petition to join the NBA as an expansion franchise in 2021. Through comedy and basketball, the Globetrotters remain a unique part of global sports culture.
