Han Wo was a significant Chinese poet from the late Tang dynasty. He lived during a period of transition in Chinese history. His literary legacy remains important because of his unique poetic style. He is often linked to the Min state during his later years. Scholars study his life to understand the culture of his time. His work helped shape specific styles of Chinese poetry.

Writing and official service were the two main parts of his life. Han Wo first had to master the imperial examination system. In 889, he passed this exam and earned a Jinshi degree. This degree was a high level of academic achievement. After this, he worked as a scholar at the Hanlin Academy. He also served as a low-ranking official at the Central Secretariat. Eventually, he rose to the position of Vice-Minister of Defense.

His identity involved several different names used in different contexts. A courtesy name is a name used by adults in formal settings. Han Wo had several possible courtesy names. Some records call him Zhiguang, while others use Zhiyao. A third possibility is the name Zhiyuan. He also used an art name, which is Yushan-Qiaoren. These names help historians track his identity through various ancient texts.

His biography is recorded in several historical sources. Chapter 183 of the New Book of Tang provides a short account of his life. This text is a primary source for understanding his background. Other works like the Tang Cai Zi Zhuan also mention him. The Liexian Zhuan offers clues about his given name. These different records sometimes offer slightly different details about his names. This variety shows how much historians must piece together.

Han Wo's life was shaped by the politics of the Tang dynasty. He earned the trust of Emperor Zhaozong during his career. He worked alongside the emperor to oppose the influence of the eunuchs. However, his political path faced a major obstacle. A man named Zhu Quanzhong did not like Han Wo. This dislike led to Han Wo being sent into exile. He was sent away to Pu Prefecture, which is modern Fan County in Henan.

Exile changed the course of his remaining years. After being sent away, he did not return to government service. He spent his final years living in the Min Kingdom. He never made it back to the capital city of Chang'an. Han Wo died around the year 923. His life ended far from the place where he was born in Jingzhao.

His poetic contributions are perhaps his most lasting achievement. He is known for a style characterized by sensual beauty. An anthology of his poems is called the Xianglian Ji. This book is so important that it gave its name to a poetic style called xianglian-ti. His other poems are collected in a work titled the Yushan-Qiaoren Ji. This collection preserves his various poetic expressions for future readers.

Even centuries later, Han Wo's influence can still be seen. His writing style reached far beyond his own lifetime. For example, the fourteenth-century poet Yang Weizhen was influenced by his work. This shows how poetry connects different eras of history. His legacy is preserved in the many books of the Quan Tangshi. These collections ensure his voice is not lost to time.
